about

the monkey budget story

Monkey Budget was founded in 2025 by Ben Oliver and Justin Plant, who also founded Storyboard Media back in 2014. This time, we’re starting fresh—with 11 years of agency ownership and experience, and a much better logo.

Our team includes:

  • Writers with sketch, stand-up, and screenwriting backgrounds.
  • Actors, improvisers, and directors with real comedic chops.
  • A growing cast of creative misfits who can punch up your messaging and steal the show at your trade event.

We’ve also built a partnership with Mettlesome, a non-profit comedy theater and school, to bring emerging talent into the world of branded content. Because yes, you can make money doing comedy. We’re living proof.

Fun fact about Ben: Once had a recurring dream about being chased by a walking briefcase. Turned it into a video pitch.

Fun fact about Justin: Claims he invented “the chair nap” — not sleeping on a chair, but as a chair.

We’re Weirdly Serious About B2B Comedy

Monkey Budget is a comedy-first creative agency for B2B brands. We believe the fastest way to stand out in a crowded marketplace is to be unforgettable—and the fastest way to be unforgettable is to make people feel something. Preferably a laugh. Or at least a confused giggle.

We help serious companies do unserious things on purpose. Because humor isn’t risky—being boring is.

Why We Started Monkey Budget

We ran our last agency for over 10 years. We made great videos. But somewhere along the way, the work got too safe. We found ourselves stuck in a loop of cutting together existing footage to a new VO. No fun ideas. No memorable projects. No pitches that made us (or our clients) excited.

And if running a company is going to suck, we figured, it might as well suck in a goat costume.

Monkey Budget was born from a need to reconnect with the type of work we loved doing all along: funny, smart, strategic content that actually moved the needle. The kind people talked about. Remembered. Shared. Referenced years later, like the guy who once told us, “Every time I think of you, I think of that goat in the men’s room.”

That goat was real. Her name was Lucy. She helped sell a mobile app. Long story.

What Does “Monkey Budget” Mean?

It’s an inside joke. During a brainstorm for a campaign, we once pitched a scene involving a remote worker and his pet monkey wreaking havoc in the background. Our producer said, “Guys, we don’t have a monkey budget.”

So we faked it. We turned the monkey into an off-screen dog. Played by a production assistant. Tugging on an ethernet cable.

From then on, “monkey budget” became our code for making big creative ideas work with scrappy solutions. It’s not about cutting corners. It’s about pushing boundaries with what you’ve got. And making it look damn good anyway.

Our Philosophy:
Make ‘Em Laugh, Make It Matter

B2B marketing is stuck. Data-driven decision making has become data-worship. Brand voices have blurred into beige. And everyone’s running the same playbook: white papers, webinars, buzzwords.

We believe there’s a better way.

Comedy cuts through noise. It creates emotional connection. It builds trust faster than a gated PDF. It makes your brand more human, more approachable, and more memorable—all while still driving results.

Fun isn’t a detour. It’s the whole point.

What “Comedy-First” Means to Us

At our previous agency, we were strategy-first. And we still are. But now, we start every project assuming the funny belongs.

We don’t bury the fun idea in the appendix. We lead with it. We don’t pitch two safe concepts and one risky one. We pitch three smart, funny ones.

Being comedy-first means:

  • We approach every brief with humor in mind
  • We take the work seriously, not ourselves
  • We design our process to be as enjoyable as the final product

We’re still delivering results. We’re just laughing a lot more along the way.

We help serious companies do unserious things on purpose. Because humor isn’t risky—being boring is.

Why B2B?

Because B2C already has a thousand funny agencies. B2B needs one that actually knows what an MQL is.

We work with brave B2B brands who are ready to break the cycle of safe, ignorable content and start making things that spark conversations, win hearts, and drive real engagement.

If that’s you?

Welcome. Let’s make something funny.
